Did You See Her?

Tonight I saw something truly incredible. Something that most often only God gets to see. It was one of the most humbling and beautiful things that can happen on this side of eternity. No, it wasn’t a rare gamma ray burst or some other natural phenomenon. It was a bride. She entered the room and her gaze caught mine. She was adorned in glorious jewels and shone with the delight of her lover. I had never seen her beauty in this way, and I was humbled by the grace she carried.

Who is this bride? I believe you know her. Though you may have discounted her as just another person throughout your day. Maybe she didn’t speak your language or qualify by your standards of thinking. Or perhaps you were looking down at your phone when she passed by. See, there are two lies that can keep us from noticing this beautiful bride.

Let me introduce you to someone I call pride. He is a sneaky sort! He whispers this lie in the dead of night and somehow we fall for it more often that we’d like to admit. “What I believe is better than what everyone else believes!” Now written in print, this seems quite absurd. But, church, if we get down to the heart of it all, this little lie can be the reason for our fall. See, if pride can make you think that you are alone on your walk – that your beliefs separate you from the grace of the cross, you will lose the ability to see the strength and beauty in the bride. You will spend your time trying just to survive.

The second lie can be hard to identify. It comes in the back door during prayer when all is

well. “Our community is the only one being used by God to transform our city.” This one caught my eye, more than I’d like to admit. It can narrow our focus and cause us to miss some of the intricate parts all making up God’s heart. To be chosen, yes. To be loved, yes. But when we receive these words and take them in only as our own, we risk ending up in the end discovering, we are all alone. From the beginning, two is better than one. Yet somehow we forget this in our human minds, we forget the priceless gift of His Son. Grace and favor were not created by some big bang. They were bought with a price. They were bought with His name.

What a humbling thought, to understand we are chosen. But not just us – every believer across every generation, every nation. Time laughs when we stand in pride, for it sees the cloud of witnesses and all the believers gone by. One spark won’t light up a night sky, but gather the flames and watch the stars gaze in envy. Never underestimate the power of unity. So pause for a moment, open your eyes. Gaze in front of you and realize – it’s our reflection that caught my breath tonight. Do you see her? Reach out your hand. Realize that, all this time, this beautiful bride? She is really you and I.
